Graduate Certificate in Social Work Practice & Graduate Diploma in Social Work Practice
Two new postgraduate courses will be offered at UTAS in Advanced Social Work Practice from 2010 forward:
- a Graduate Certificate in Social Work Practice, comprising two units of advanced practice taken over one year, and
- a Graduate Diploma in Social Work Practice, comprising four units over two years.
Full credit for the Graduate Certificate and Diploma can be gained for ongoing study into the current Masters of Social Work Practice.
The study program enables field practitioners in a variety of human service agencies to enhance their knowledge and practice at an advanced level. The course is intended to provide social work practitioners with an innovative model for reflective practice and to increase competence in a range of social work fields and methods. The importance of locating social work practice in the political and organizational context will be emphasised.
The minimum time of completion for the Graduate Certificate in Social Work Practice will be one year, comprising two consecutive semesters; this is consistent with part time mode of delivery. The maximum time for completion for the Graduate Certificate will be two years which will allow students to undertake each unit twice if failures occur. In certain cases, permission may be granted for completion of the course over an extended period of time.

Master of Social Work Practice – Course Code R7H
The Master of Social Work Practice degree course is offered by the School of Sociology and Social Work on a fee-paying basis. The study program enables field practitioners in a variety of human service agencies to enhance their knowledge and practice at an advanced level. The course is intended to provide social work practitioners with an innovative model for reflective practice and to increase competence in a range of social work fields and methods. The importance of locating social work practice in the political and organizational context will be emphasised.
The course is available only on the Launceston campus of the University and can be completed in three years part-time study. The maximum period allowed for completion of the degree is five years, although in certain cases permission may be granted for completion of the course over an extended period of time. In order to be eligible for entry to the course candidates must have qualified with a Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Tasmania or at a recognised tertiary education institution.
