Southern Gospel Choir

How to Join

Next Intake: Early March 2018 (exact date TBA)

The Southern Gospel Choir (SGC) is an ensemble initiative run by the Conservatorium of Music contributing to a number of different courses within the University of Tasmania. The SGC can be taken as an elective within many UTAS courses, including the Bachelor of Music, and can also contribute to an Ensemble Major within the Bachelor of Musical Arts.

If you are a community member interested in experiencing the choir you are welcome to come along to a rehearsal as a guest, but to be a full member of the SGC and participate in our concerts you will need to enrol in one of our courses. Successful enrolment in SGC is subject to an audition.

We handle all our enrolments in the first few rehearsals at the beginning of each university semester, so if you are a new to the choir you will need to attend rehearsals during these intake periods. Semester starting dates change depending on the year (see below), but generally speaking these will be in the last week of February and in the middle of July. Auditions for all new members occur at the end of rehearsals during the intake period.

Rehearsals run on a Wednesday night from 6pm until 8pm in the Conservatorium of Music Recital Hall, 5 Sandy Bay Road, Hobart.

Auditions for the SGC are very casual and are designed for new members to meet and work briefly with our Choir Director, Assoc Prof Andrew Legg, and our Vocal Coach, Maria Lurighi.

Please prepare one verse and chorus of your favourite song, or a song that really shows off your talents. Maria and Andrew will assess your voice type and discuss how you would like to be involved with the choir.
