KGG 355 Studio 2005 - Traverse Methodology

A traverse was undertaken for the horizontal component of the terrestrial techniques for this project. This was completed in order to provide extra observations for later on in the adjustment phase to strengthen up the network. It should be noted that the traverse was only undertaken around points of the network where the GPS coverage was questionable due to obstructions such as buildings and where new points had been added to the network. The following is a list of the equipment used to complete the traverse.

  • Leica TC307 Total Station – Serial Number 685146
  • 3 Tripods
  • 2 Prisms

The process outlined below shows how the traverse was undertaken in the field.

  • First of all, the Leica TC307 total station was checked to ensure that it was sufficiently within adjustment. This was done by observing a set of FL and FR angles to a nearby target followed by a target in the distance and calculating the difference between FL and FR – 180 for each set.
  • Once the instrument was determined to be in adjustment, the total station was then set up on a tripod over SS30 and two prisms set up on tripods, one each over SS05B and SS31.
  • 3 sets of angles and distances will then be observed to each of these points.
  • Using the principle of constrained centring, the set up at SS05B was then moved onto SS07 (the next point in the network) and the instrument will be swapped with a prism (leaving the tripods and tribrachs where they are) and a further 3 sets of angles and distances will be observed at this next set up.
