The Student Learning team in the Student Centre
The Student Centre at UTAS is all about enabling you to make the most of your time here at UTAS. Our motto, “Your Experience, Your Learning, Your Wellbeing, Our Advice” is our way of letting you know that we are here as partners in your learning, to ensure that you achieve the goals you have set for yourself and even undertake and discover opportunities and skills that you didn’t even know you could obtain and achieve.
The Student Centre is for you! You need us to apply, to enrol (and dare I say it, to pay your fees and sit your exams). But more than that we want you to take up all the services we have to offer – and our team, the Student Learning team, is all about you making the most of your learning. We work with you to develop your academic skills. We also offer programs that support you to acquire the specific thinking and studying skills for your disciplines.
Our Services
The Student Learning team offers a range of programs and services to support you to succeed at UTAS. Student Learning is for everyone. Come and see us if:
- you are doing well but want to focus on a particular academic skill and really master it;
- you are finding particular academic skills such as referencing, numeracy or academic writing challenging;
- English is not your first language and you need to keep developing your grammar, speaking, reading and listening skills and understand the communication skills of the discipline you are studying;
- you are studying by distance* or on campus;
- you just want to drop in and chat with a student who has done it all before and can give you advice on assignment planning and writing;
- you want to get together with other students studying the same subjects and really keep on top of the material. Students who got great marks in that subject just a year or two ago facilitate the sessions.
* International students on a student visa can only undertake distance courses if they are studying in a country other than Australia.
Our Mission
The Student Learning and Academic Development team within the Student Centre supports and enhances student learning and academic skill development. Through collaborative partnerships we provide expertise and student learning programs, services and resources to support the University's strategic goal to facilitate excellence in learning for undergraduate and postgraduate students. We support students transition to University and their development as capable, proactive learners throughout their transition to UTAS.
Our Vision
Our vision is to positively impact every UTAS students learning experience, from commencement of their degree through to graduation, by providing quality, progressive, and sustainable learning services and programs that enable students to succeed in their studies and to graduate.
Our Guiding Principles
- Value every student and believe in their potential to succeed
- Strive to exceed student expectations
- Challenge and empower students to take ownership of their own learning
- Provide quality support and resources to maximise student retention
- Work with teaching staff to embed and connect learning development to students disciplines of study
- Be informed by and contribute to best practice and research in student learning in higher education and across our fields of practice
- Be transparent and collegial in sharing our work with students, with UTAS staff, and with national and international colleagues
- Evaluate and report upon our practices and impact on student outcomes
- Undertake learning and professional development opportunities to ensure we remain current in our areas of practice
- Provide learning and leadership opportunities to high achieving students through our peer learning programs
A wonderful aspect about today’s higher education is the diversity of our students. We value the richness that this diversity brings to UTAS - particularly in the state of Tasmania where we are privileged to have you choose to study - so that our classrooms and the activities you undertake outside your classrooms are full of your stories, knowledge, and ideas.
I encourage you to explore the Student Learning website to find out more about what is on offer and to make the most of every opportunity. We can support you face to face or virtually through our online services and programs. I particularly encourage you to be proactive with your learning. Don’t wait until there is a crisis. We can work with you to plan ahead and to develop your skills so that you have the best opportunity for success.
If you have any questions please contact us. We really look forward to meeting you.
