The University of Tasmania values the role of students in contributing to an optimum learning environment. Students who have experienced a course of study, developed discipline-specific and generic academic and study skills, and been highly successful across these areas have much to offer their peers. They bring a unique student-centred perspective to learning.
Formal peer learning opportunities and programs are designed not only to support student learning, but also to enhance students’ overall experience in tertiary environments, their capacity to succeed and continue on to complete their chosen degree, and their development of generic graduate attributes.
The UTAS Peer Learning Framework (PDF 238.6KB) presents the theory behind peer learning and describes the development of a planning tool for UTAS that underpins peer learning programs for both students and staff. The aim of the framework is to ensure that the peer learning programs we offer are sustainable and of high quality, and to ensure that we evaluate and continually improve the programs that we provide. The framework also enables consideration and development of new programs that may enhance the student learning experience at UTAS.
The following programs at UTAS are underpinned by the Peer Learning Framework (PDF 238.6KB):
Peer Assisted Study Sessions
The PASS program is an international academic program where high achieving students facilitate regular study groups so students can work together to reinforce key concepts and develop effective study strategies for the units they are studying. PASS has been operating at UTAS for six years and is now a core program supporting the transition and retention of students in tertiary studies across all UTAS faculties and the AMC.
Student Learning Drop In
The Student Learning Drop In program was opened in 2009 to offer peer-led support for the development of UTAS students writing and general study skills. Drop In is now available on both the Hobart and Launceston campuses.
Peer Professional Learning Program for Awards (coordinated through the Awards and Grants office)
The Peer Professional Learning Program (PPLP) for Awards was developed at UTAS and piloted in 2012. The program aims to engage teaching award applicants in peer-led professional learning, whilst also providing them with peer leadership and mentoring opportunities in a group-supported environment.
Please contact the Head of Student Learning and Academic Development if you are interested in the role of peer learning at UTAS, new peer learning opportunities, or in undertaking peer learning research.
