As a Learning Skills Adviser, Belinda greatly appreciates the chance to interact with students from a variety of cultural milieus. She considers that learning something of students' backgrounds while helping them to meet academic demands contributes to a 'human', rewarding working environment. Over the past few years, Belinda has had a particular focus on working with students from Cultural and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds to develop their academic language, writing and study skills, and as a member of the Student Learning and Academic Development team, enjoys working with all students.
For the past 16 years Belinda has taught English as a first Language in addition to English as an Additional Language in Australian universities and eight other countries. Aside from working in Student Learning, she teaches General and Academic English and examines IELTS at the English Language Centre.
Belinda has an interest in analysing how wider social trends involving therapeutic, environmental and 'risk aversion' discourses can impact on education. More specifically, how such discourses can shape policy and procedure, and perceptions, expectations, teaching practice and language use within the tertiary setting.
