As a Learning Skills Adviser and the sole member of the Student Learning and Academic Development team at the Cradle Coast, Cathy offers students advice and guidance to advance their academic skills, aiming to set them on the path to becoming self-sufficient independent learners. She develops and delivers unit specific and generic workshops, as well as providing small group and individual consultations for students. Cathy hopes to expand an outreach service for students to have better access to these services across the North West Coast. She also provides support for PASS leaders based at the campus.
Cathy is also the unit coordinator of UniStart, an intensive, pre-semester, flexible program, offered both on campus and by distance, which aims to provide students with the skills they will need to succeed in their university journey.
Cathy’s teaching experience spans over twenty five years at both pre-tertiary and tertiary levels. She has been a pre-tertiary examiner, syllabus designer and examination critic and her tertiary teaching includes delivering an academic skills based unit for pre-service teachers and Arts students. Cathy has delivered UniStart at Cradle Coast since 2007, and has prepared and presented learning and teaching workshops in both academic and research skills for students.
In 2010, as a member of the UniStart team, Cathy was awarded a Vice Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, for enhancing the first year experience through the flexible delivery and continued development of a program which nurtures critical thinking and independent study skills in commencing students. In 2011, Cathy was also part of the UniStart team which was awarded an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning.
