Sally's role, as a member of the Student Learning and Academic Development team, is to work with students to develop the skills they need to succeed at university. As Sandy Bay campus coordinator of the UniStart program, Sally develops and delivers teaching modules to assist students in their transition into academic culture. Sally is also one of the Learning Skills Advisers in the Student Learning and Academic Development team, where she works with students, individually or in small groups, to develop their academic skills. Another part of Sally's role is the co-ordination of the Student Learning Drop In space. The Drop In space is a student facilitated centre, where students can ask questions of other high achieving students to develop their study and assignment preparation skills.
In all these roles, Sally brings her experience of teaching across primary, secondary and tertiary sectors, as well as her passion for teaching.
Sally's teaching role is primarily in the area of Student Learning. She delivers the UniStart program on the Sandy Bay and Darlinghurst campuses. Sally works with others in her team to prepare a range of teaching resources to assist students to develop their academic skills, and also to train the Student Learning Mentors in their roles. Sally also teaches Aboriginal Studies in the Faculty of Education: teaching cultural awareness to pre-service teachers.
In 2011, Sally, as a member of the UniStart team, received an Australian Learning and Teaching Council citation for excellence in teaching. She has been awarded Teaching Merit Certificates for her teaching in the area of Aboriginal Studies (2010) and also for her training and support of the Student Learning Mentors in the Drop In space (2011).
Sally's main areas of interests are peer learning and cultural awareness. Her current project focusses on the provision of cultural awareness training for peer leaders.
