Steve joined the University of Tasmania staff in 2008 and has since worked in a learning development role as well as being a tutor with the University Preparation and Pathways (UPP) programs. As a Learning Skills Adviser, Steve works with students to develop their academic skills across a wide range of areas including academic writing, numeracy and study skills. As part of the Student Learning and Academic Development team at Newham campus, Steve provides support across the Newnham, Inveresk and AMC campuses and can work with staff to provide discipline-specific academic skill support to students through both consultations and workshops.
Steve's other key responsibilities are the development and delivery of the face to face UniStart program at the Newnham and Rozelle campuses; year-long support for Newnham, Rozelle, Darlinghurst and distance students through individual consultations and workshops; and the management of the Newnham Student Learning Drop In space.
Steve is an experienced teacher, having taught for over 30 years. Over this period, he has worked in a number of high schools in Tasmania and in the U.K. Since joining the University, Steve has had regular involvement in the delivery of UniStart, at the Newnham and Rozelle campuses, first in a support role and more recently as the principal lecturer.
In 2010, as a member of the UniStart team, Steve was awarded a Vice Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning, for enhancing the first year experience through the flexible delivery and continued development of a program which nurtures critical thinking and independent study skills in commencing students. In 2011, Steve was also part of the UniStart team which was awarded an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning.
Steve is interested in exploring peer learning in the context of writing centres.
Student Learning Mentor Drop In for International and Domestic Students at UTAS: In 2011, the support services at UTAS were restructured to create a "one stop shop" for international and domestic students. A site of integration of these two services was the Student Learning Mentor Drop In space. The aim of this project is to evaluate and document this transition of the Drop In service from a staff and a student perspective.
