Mercury Passage was initially mapped in 2002 as an initiative of the Tasmanian Aquaculture and Fisheries Institute. The mapping of Great Oyster Bay was completed in 2005 partly funded through NRM as part of the "Mapping of estuarine and marine habitats in the Southern NRM region" project. 2006 however, has seen the inclusion of the baseline mapping of Moulting Lagoon added to this region.
