Adam Manning began study of the drum kit at the age five under the watchful eye of his father, Gavin Manning. In 2003, Adam completed a Bachelor of Music in classical percussion and 2004 completed research in the investigation of drum teaching methods at the University of Newcastle Conservatorium of Music. Adam has performed on Channel Nine, Channel Seven’s ‘Sunrise program’ with John Paul Young and has recorded and performed with: Rhonda Burchmore, Harry Vander, Peter Cousens and The Wilson Pickers. In 2005, Adam was engaged as a percussion teacher at the University of Newcastle Conservatorium of Music and the Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music. Currently Adam is head percussion teacher at Nudgee College Brisbane. Title: Digital Hybrid Percussion: the development of a standardized playing technique through reflective practice. This doctoral research is focused on developing new performance techniques for modern digital percussion instruments, with the intent that a single musician can simultaneously perform the role of both kit player and percussionist. Playing techniques that emerge as a result of the research program will be demonstrated through a series of recordings, culminating in a commercial quality CD that consolidates research findings. This research project will address the following key questions: To what degree can digital percussion instruments be used in traditional percussion performance? What new performance opportunities arise for a single percussionist with a digital percussion setup? What is the performance potential of digital instruments beyond developing new techniques?
