Dr Philpott holds the fulltime position of Early Career Development Fellowship (teaching and research) at the University of Tasmania Conservatorium of Music. She teaches a range of undergraduate and postgraduate units within the fields of music history, music theory and musicology, across both classical and contemporary music programs. Her PhD dissertation, completed in 2010, focused on the projection of an Australian identity in the music and persona of expatriate composer Malcolm Williamson and she has published several articles related to this research, including “The Master and the Media: Malcolm Williamson in the Press” for the book Musical Islands: Exploring Connections Between Music, Place and Research, published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing (2009). She contributed to the entry on Williamson in the most recent edition of Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (2007) and has also published book reviews and an article on Peter Sculthorpe’s musical response to social injustice in his String Quartet No. 14 for Context: Journal of Music Research (2004).
In addition to her research in Australian music, she has a particular interest in musical responses to Antarctica and she regularly contributes to the Bachelor of Antarctic Studies program offered through the University’s Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS). Publications stemming from her interest in this area include an article titled “Notes from the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration: Gerald S. Doorly’s Songs of the ‘Morning’” in Context: Journal of Music Research 37 (2012) and she was recently awarded an Arts and Environment Research Group Project Grant to present her research at the IV Antarctic Art and Culture International Conference and Festival in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Dr Philpott is the current Secretary of the Tasmanian Chapter of the Musicological Society of Australia, a position she has held since the Chapter’s formation in 2007. She is also a music critic for the Mercury newspaper (Hobart) and regularly presents pre-concert talks for the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra’s Master Series.
