Matthew Ives began playing the drum kit at age 7 and received tuition early on from Bill Browne and Mike Duffy in Launceston. In 1994, Matthew attained a Bachelor of Applied Science at the University of Tasmania (Launceston) and pursued a short career in food analytical work. Matthew began studying at the Conservatorium of Music in 2003 to then received Bachelor and First Class Honours degrees in Music and an offer of a PhD scholarship. Matthew plays professionally in jazz and rock ensembles state-wide and leads his own big band. Research: Buddy Rich/Big Band Interaction: A Study in Performance Practice Prior to big band performance, drummers are often given a skeletal drum chart to follow. The drummer then realises this chart in a way that responds to what the big band is playing and in a manner that is in keeping with the style of the work and the performance environment. Although textbooks can advise the drummer on how to realise a big band drum chart, there has been little scholarly investigation into the topic of big band/drummer interaction. This project looks at the way Buddy Rich interacted with the arranged sections from a sample of big band works.
