James teaches in Visual Communication and is particularly interested in the potential to create collaboration and fluidity between different disciplines.
James Coordinates the following units:
James was awarded a PhD in fine arts from the University of Tasmania, School of Art in 2007. His doctorate visually explored cultural and social relationships with place, primarily focusing on situations specific to Tasmania. Since completing his PhD James has received state and national funding grants for individual and collaborative projects as well as exhibiting extensively throughout Australia and recently internationally in Berlin. In 2009 he was awarded the Qantas Foundation, Encouragement of Contemporary Art Award. In 2010 James was appointed Associate Lecturer in Fine arts and currently predominantly lectures in visual communication.
James creates work through social engagement. Predominantly using documentary strategies such as interview, observation, facilitation and subtle direction he interrogates social and cultural relations. Mainly based in video, his research practice also incorporates photography, sound and text. Through the process of working with individuals and communities James questions the implicit and explicit narratives of place. His work also confronts issues surrounding working with the ‘other’, such as the ethical responsibility of the artist and differences between subjective and objective experience.
