General Responsibilities
Research Interests
The socio-aesthetic status of furniture design as an indicator of contemporary values; the application of this research involves the cross-referencing of different materials and technologies to various fields, focussing on structural experimentation with new forms of furniture. Also the integration of furniture to architecture, and site-specific public sculptural installation.
Career Summary
- Studied at Chesterfield School of Art and High Wycombe College of Art and Technology, U.K.
- Appointed to Tasmanian School of Art 1970 and remained on staff when the School became part of the University of Tasmania.
- Acting Head of school in 1982 overseeing entry phase into the University and again in 1995.
- Member of the Australia Council's Crafts Board '85-'87, the Design Board '88-'89, and the Visual Arts/Crafts Board '88-89.
- Founding member of the Assoc. for the Development of Design in Tasmania, the Australian Academy of Design and the Furniture Designers' Assoc. in Tasmania. Established the Centre for Furniture Design in 1990 with Helsham funded grants totalling $1.85M.
