Dr Deborah Malor's PhD research from the University of Sydney was a cross-disciplinary look at suburbia through a televisual framing of the picturesque as perpetuated in gardening, DIY, and renovation shows.
Before coming to Tasmania in 2000, Deborah taught at the University of Sydney in both Fine Arts and Architecture and at UTS (Sydney) in Design, and researched and catalogued significant collections of 19th century art and photography.
She has presented and published papers on her research in the USA, Europe and New Zealand and has acted on numerous boards and panels for organisations such as CAST, Arts Tasmania, and AAANZ.
Deborah’s research interests play with concepts of garden, landscape, and wilderness in settler societies. These are usually grounded in the broader understandings of photography, sculpture and related spatial practices, and deal with the persistence of ideas of the archive, narrative and performativity in these media.
