School of Information and Communication Technology

From the food on our plates to space exploration, banking to medicine, to the games on your mobile and the software you use at work or school, our lives rely on computing technologies.

Information and Communication Technology supports—and changes!—every industry around the world.

Information and Communication Technology at the University of Tasmania supports this global need through research in cutting-edge artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction and games, including software and games to improve health and enable educational attainment. Our degrees allow graduates to work in almost any field, developing software solutions of the future, embedded in multi-disciplinary teams or leading ICT-driven changes in industries such as agriculture, future technologies, and more.

Tasmania has a thriving Information and Communication Technology sector, built on widespread fibre-to-the-premises internet, entrepreneurial spirit and the attractive Tasmanian lifestyle.

More than a qualification

Our staff are active participants in industry. Staff and students in the Games and Creative Technologies major, for example, make games for console, PC and mobile that appeal to the global market and provide students with incredible opportunities. With links to big players in the tech world such as Facebook, Google and Sony, our staff work hard to create unique, life changing experiences that add value to our courses.

Whatever major Information and Communication Technology students choose, at the end of the course they will graduate with practical skills, invaluable networks, and real-word experience.

Steering tech in the right direction

For Molly Steer, raising the profile of women in STEM is a cause close to her heart- and one she was able to pass on to the next generation of students at the Big Day In tech event on the University of Tasmania's Sandy Bay campus.

Our Courses

Work Integrated Learning

To deliver graduates who have the practical experience demanded by employers, our undergraduate and postgraduate degrees contain a range of built-in and optional work integrated learning (WIL) experiences.

The flagship of our WIL experience is the Information and Communication Technology Capstone project. Studied as part of the final year of both our undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, you will work in a team with other students to create a solution to a real life problem for a real client. This includes everything from project scoping to budgets, plus all the technical development required to make it happen, so you graduate with a real project on your resume and real experience under your belt.

As electives at undergraduate level we also offer the opportunity for students to engage in work placements this gives you the opportunity to:

  • Experience areas of your chosen profession before graduation and to reflect on how your studies have prepared you for the work environment;
  • Develop your communication, time management and customer service skills, experience the corporate environment and obtain feedback on your performance;
  • Develop a richer appreciation of the graduate capabilities required of all ICT professionals, particularly skills such as communication, negotiation and problem-solving strategies;
  • Experience the application of theoretical knowledge integrated with practical applications and experiences in a real environment.

There are also a range of electives you can add to your degree to increase your WIL experiences. Different units are available for different degrees and levels of study, and cover Information and Communication Technology professional practices, project management, systems strategy, industry placement and more.

Past Information and Communication Technology Projects

"Our Information and Communication Technology Project was to create a mobile based game for local game developer, Secret Lab, who have clients all over the world. I want to be a project manager, and the Information and Communication Technology Project units helped match my expectations to reality."

– Ryan Ward, Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Computing graduate
