About Us

The Centre for Perennial Horticulture works with innovative established and emerging industries. Our focus is on quality and yield in apples, cherries and wine grapes, wine making and with expertise in extractive crops, walnuts and berries as well.

A feature of our Centre is its strong national and international research collaborations.  The Centre leads a number of large collaborative programs, including;

  • The National Apple and Pear five-year R&D program (PIPS), in collaboration with
  • Plant and Food Research New Zealand,
  • Department of Primary Industries Victoria and
  • Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Queensland,
  • The Tasmanian Australian Wine Research Institute/TIA node, focused on Pinot Noir and Sparkling viticulture and wine making
  • Cherry production physiology, in collaboration with the Washington State University.

We have two main locations in southern and northern Tasmania:

  • UTAS Sandy Bay campus and New Town Research Laboratories in Hobart, within close proximity to the Huon, Coal River and Derwent Valley regions;
  • Mt Pleasant Laboratories in Launceston, within close proximity to the Tamar Valley region.

Discipline areas of strength are plant physiology in production and post-harvest, plant pathology (Botrytis, powdery mildew), integrated pest management, and soil science and management.

Projects span the spectrum of Research, Development and Extension and where appropriate include Research Higher Degree candidates (Masters and PhDs). Staff teach cutting edge horticulture into the School of Land and Food's horticulture teaching program.
