Bananas get shaken around as they travel across the country in trucks from the plantation to the distribution centre, before arriving at stores.
PhD candidate Indika Fernando is researching the causes of mechanical damage in bananas along the post-harvest supply chain, and simulation is an important part of his research project.
Indika is currently testing the impact of vibration on bananas at the engineered packaging and distribution test lab in Melbourne in collaboration with the University of Victoria. These simulation tests will help develop tools to reduce banana wastage.
