Research Activities
TILES has recently realised $1 million worth of research and consultancy income. It has been scoped so as not to compete with other research organisations, such as the Australian Institute of Criminology. TILES work in criminology will therefore centre on law enforcement rather than the causes of crime.
Research focuses on prevention, enforcement and corrections.

These areas include:
- Drug Law Enforcement;
- Crime Prevention;
- Natural Resource Management and Environmental Crime; and
- Forensic Science and Policing.
Research outcomes will have significant impact on crime prevention and law enforcement as well as addressing national research priorities. These include: Safeguarding Australia (understanding our region and the world) and Promoting and Maintaining Good Health (strengthening Australia’s social and economic fabric).
TILES operates within the following organisational framework:
- Board of Directors;
- Management Committee;
- Director;
- Staff;
- Research Steering Committee;
- Research Fellows; and
- Research Associates.
TILES’ Steering Committee ensures that research is
- inter-disciplinary;
- multi-jurisdictional; and
- has law enforcement representation.
Concept Proposals
A Concept Proposal provides a guide to approaching the Institute, with the specific aim of considering collaborative research. It would also serve as a template for the initial testing of the feasibility of a relevant research idea.
Complete the Concept Proposal (612KB pdf) and send it to the Director of TILES.
