Thesis Title: 'Exploring Ideas of Health with African Refugee Women in Tasmania'
Abstract
This qualitative study aims to examine the lived experiences of African refugee women in Tasmania in order to determine factors that may lead to more appropriate health services. The project is being proposed because of the lack of Australian research material on the health experiences of refugee women outside a medical or policy framework. Theories and concepts in the sociology of emotion will be adopted to identify social processes which contribute to ontological insecurity in refugee women (based on Hutchinson 2002). The project will be carried out using a modified action research approach with the aim of involving African refugee women in identifying strategies for change in the health system.
