Emergency Management Stakeholder Tertiary Pathway Consultation Workshop

emergency_management_consultationAssociate Professor Angela Dwyer, Associate Professor Roberta Julian, Dr Romy Winter from the University of Tasmania, and Cheryl Ames from the State Emergency Service convened the ‘Emergency Management Stakeholder Tertiary Pathway Consultation’ workshop to develop a focus for a tertiary pathway in emergency management at the University of Tasmania. The workshop was organised at the University of Tasmania on 23rd November.

The workshop participants were senior staff and managers across the emergency management sector, including: State Emergency Service, Tasmania Police, Tasmania Fire Service, Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience, Department of Premier and Cabinet, Ambulance Tasmania, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment, TasWater, Tasmanian Flood Recovery Taskforce, Red Cross, Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul, Local Government Association of Tasmania, Community Fire Safety, Council of Churches, Volunteering Tasmania, University of Tasmania and IMAS.

Representatives from all these organisations volunteered their time to contribute to targeted discussion about the gaps in tertiary level education in emergency management in Tasmania and Australia, and what a tertiary pathway might consist of.

The workshop was a great success and the ideas generated were fantastic! The team is now producing a document for additional feedback from the stakeholder group and they will be seeking people interested in being part of an ongoing advisory group for the pathway in the future.

In 2016, Associate Professor Dwyer received a Career Development Scholarship to develop teaching and learning pathways at the University of Tasmania. The scholarship is supported by the School of Social Sciences which recognises the strategic opportunity to consolidate and expand its capacity in Police Studies, new jurisdictions and across Emergency Management.
