Tasmanian Institute of Law Enforcement Studies (TILES)

Teaching and Research Grants Received for 2017

Dr Isabelle Bartkowiak-Théron, Dr Romy Winter and Dr Robert Trevethan (Written Impressions, formerly Charles Sturt University) are the recipients of a University of Tasmania Vice-Chancellor Teaching Development Grant.

The funded project titled Building evidence for the professionalisation of police through high impact teaching and learning: Cementing Tasmania as the international leader in police tertiary education’ will be ongoing throughout 2017, with dissemination outcomes scheduled for 2018.

Dr Bartkowiak-Théron and Dr Winter are senior researchers with TILES.

Dr Katrina Clifford has been awarded a 2017 University of Tasmania Teaching Development Grant in the Local Project Grants Category to develop a new work-integrated learning initiative for Journalism, Media and Communications students in partnership with the peak body in the community services sector in Tasmania, TasCOSS.

Dr Clifford is a lecturer and the work integrated learning coordinator in the Journalism, Media and Communications program and a researcher with TILES.

Dr Max Travers (School of Social Sciences) and Dr Isabelle Bartkowiak-Théron are the recipients of a Criminology Research Grant for their project titled ‘Bail decision-making and pre-trial services: A comparative study of magistrates courts in the states of Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales’ to identify the practical issues that arise in the provision of pre-trial services.

This will result in the first detailed analysis of bail decision making, and how courts address the problems of vulnerable defendants at this stage of the criminal justice process. The project will also develop risk profiles from bail histories that will assist magistrates and policy makers in making bail decisions.

Most recently, Dr Bartkowiak-Théron has been invited to work with Risdon Prison (Department of Justice, Tasmania) staff, as part of a special interest group on therapeutic group work. This aligns with her research in TILES on vulnerability in the criminal justice, and on the synergies between law enforcement and public health.

Dr Bartkowiak-Théron has also been appointed as a member of the Editorial Board of Transform: The Journal of Engaged Scholarship.
