Internationalising the curriculum

The University of Tasmania acknowledges that 'internationalisation' is more than just attracting international students. The University of Tasmania Plan 2005-2007 has as one of its key goals and strategies:

"Diversify and enrich the University by increasing enrolment of international students, both onshore and offshore, encouraging the participation of students and staff in overseas activities, and by internationalising the curriculum."

There are a few key principles in the internationalisation process and when developing successful initiatives we should consider.

UTAS provides students with the opportunity to participate in overseas exchanges and has made scholarships available to support this activity. Academic staff may consider study leave to an international destination as an avenue for broadening their network and incorporating global perspectives into their courses/units.

Internationalising the curriculum: Policy and strategies

See Internationalising the Curriculum at the University of Tasmania [WORD] for the UTAS Policy Statement. This policy identifies the various dimensions of internationalised curricula and strategies to develop such curricula.

Internationalisation of the curriculum involves learning and teaching activities that provide global perspectives within a subject/discipline/professional area. Content should not be limited to one region; it should provide a broad range of contexts to develop international awareness. In order to ensure that content is international in its focus there are a number of suggested strategies that can be employed. It is also useful to refer to national and international resources on initiatives and issues relating to internationalisation.
