The Discovery Orchestra at MONA: Sunday 29 September
The University of Tasmania's Conservatorium of Music is proudly launching the first in a series of concerts and events with The Discovery Orchestra at the Museum of Old and New Art.
The UTAS Discovery Orchestra's aim is to provide Australian orchestral musicians, not employed in full-time positions with symphony orchestras, more opportunities to perform.
MONA's David Walsh has recently become patron of The Discovery Orchestra, which under Artistic Director and Conductor Peter Tanfield, is dedicated to tackling the work of modern and contemporary composers, juxtaposed with great works of the established repertoire, in an evolving, adaptable and vital orchestral line-up.
UTAS Conservatorium of Music Director Andrew Legg said: "The Discovery Orchestra brings together musicians from all over Australia. They are an orchestra for hire, working in a variety of traditional and non-conventional environments.
"Regardless of what age they are, they are extremely young at heart. They want to bring a new aesthetic, a young person's raw drive, energy and exuberance to their performance.
"They want the music to jump out at the audience, and challenge traditional ideas of what music is, should be, and can be. They need to create their own authenticity, and find their own way to be relevant in a vastly new and ever changing world.
"With the support of MONA, The Discovery Orchestra is inspired to challenge conventions and think about music, place and time.
"The Conservatorium of Music and UTAS are extremely pleased to have MONA's support of this new, creative and innovative musical, educational and artistic experience," Dr Legg said.
"We are also pleased that the Tasmanian and broader national community has chosen in large part to support TDO financially, investing in the future of creativity and the young musicians who play at its leading edge."
MONA music curator Brian Ritchie said: "UTAS Conservatorium and MONA launch the first in a series of concerts and events with The Discovery Orchestra.
"Under Artistic Director and Conductor Peter Tanfield, The Discovery Orchestra will explore the world of orchestral music, specialising in challenging modern and contemporary composers.
"The Discovery Orchestra sources musicians nationally according to the needs of the compositions being performed."
