Provides an introduction to major areas in psychology and to basic techniques for psychological investigations. Lecture topics include intelligence and abilities, research methods in psychology, developmental and clinical psychology. Students are required to undertake additional reading to extend their knowledge in the areas covered in the lecture program. In laboratory classes students are introduced to psychological research through demonstrations and activities in areas related to the lecture topics, such as developmental psychology, social psychology and clinical psychology. Students are introduced to basic research design, data analysis and interpretation and develop skills in reporting findings from psychological research. Students require a pocket calculator with a square root key. Attendance at laboratory classes is compulsory.

ASSESSMENT: 2-hr exam in Nov (50%), lab exercises and essays totalling 2,500 words (50%).
TEACHING PATTERN: Two 1-hr lectures, and a 2-hr lab class weekly (13 wks)
