Since its inception in 1990, CentrStage can justifiably claim to have achieved its primary objective of presenting small-scale theatre of the highest quality. The company utilises the expertise of staff from the School of Visual & Performing Arts, professional performers, graduates and invited members of the community.
CentrStage has a key role as an incubator of new theatre, providing an avenue for the development of local actors, writers, directors and artists in associated fields. The company presents seasons of intimate theatre that are lively, diverse, sometimes provocative, but always entertaining and accessible.
As well as providing the community with high quality, affordable theatre, CentrStage plays an active role in enriching the studies of theatre students at the University of Tasmania's School of Visual and Performing Arts. Whilst the students don't perform on stage in CentrStage productions, they do gain valuable, hands on experience working backstage on CentrStage shows. CentrStage provides students with opportunities to work as stage managers, lighting and sound operators, properties masters, stage mechanics, front of house staff and in many other technical capacities.
