Spain in the 1930s. After the death of the father, the respectable mother, Bernarda Alba, imprisons her daughters within the confines of their house. Eight years in black awaits, and while this mourning lasts ‘no breath of air from the street’ is allowed in. How does each daughter deal with her desires for freedom and love? How do they defy the iron-fist of Bernarda?
Lorca (1898-1936) was one of Spain’s most celebrated poets and playwrights. The House of Bernarda Alba is his last play. Tragically, he never saw it produced. Just weeks after he completed the play, he was assassinated by Fascist forces in the Spanish Civil War.
