Penny Byrne is a visual artist who uses materials such as vintage porcelain figurines and other found objects to create artworks that wield a powerful political message. Byrne’s often humorous and satirical viewpoint presents an ongoing inquiry into popular culture and international politics. Her training as a ceramics conservator informs her practice.
She has completed a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at La Trobe University, Melbourne 1997, a Bachelor of Art (Fine Art Ceramics) at RMIT University in Melbourne, 1987 and a Graduate Diploma (Ceramics and Glass Conservation and Restoration) at West Dean College in the United Kingdom, 1990.
She has exhibited internationally and extensively in Australia. Solo exhibitions include iPROTEST, Art Basel Hong Kong (2013), Political Porcelain, Museum of Australian Democracy, Old Parliament House, Canberra (2011/12), Life is a Riot, Albury LibraryMuseum, Albury, NSW (2012), Plausible Deniability, Sullivan+Strumpf Fine Art, Sydney (2011), and Penny Byrne: Commentariat, a Deakin University touring show (2011/12). Byrne’s work has featured in numerous group shows including Haunts and Follies, Linden Centre for Contemporary Art, Melbourne (2012), Made to Last, A NETS touring exhibition (2012/13), and Thing: Beware of the Material World, Art Gallery of Western Australia (2009).
In 2010 Byrne was the subject of a documentary for the ABC TV program Artscape.
Penny is an exhibiting artist in Enucleo – contemporary clay, Co-curated by Serena Rosevear and Patrick Sutczak at Sawtooth 6 – 28 September 2013. Enucleo exhibits a selection of work representing contemporary Australian ceramic art practice and seeks to challenge the audience to re-imagine the medium of clay outside the realms of objectification and function. Enucleo has been designed to present a divergent scope of contemporary approaches to ceramic art, assembling work that combines diverse conceptual premise unrestrained by traditional processes.
