Crop Images in Macromedia Fireworks MX

These notes are based on Macromedia Fireworks MX 7.02.295 on PC. Other MX versions will be similar. These instructions are intended as a basic guide, and do not contain optimised images themselves, as they are designed to be used on campus by UTAS staff.

There are several ways to crop images in Fireworks MX. Open your image:

  1. Change by eye with the 'Crop' tool (C): Select the Crop tool (second icon, second row of tools - 1), and drag a square (you will see a dotted line with guides - 2) until image is the size you want. Hit 'Enter' to reduce the image area to the new dimensions. This new image can also be further optimised for the web in Fireworks MX.
  1. Change by eye with the Marquee tool (M): Select the Marquee tool (first icon, third row of tools - 1), and drag a square (you will see a dotted line - 2) until image is the size you want. The size of the marquee area is shown in the lower left corner (3). The dimensions can be changed here as well. The marquee rectangle can be moved around on the image with the keyboard arrows. Copy the selected area and paste into a new image (File > New...). This new image can also be optimised for the web. Other marquee shapes are available by clicking on the marquee icon.

  1. Change by values: Select Modify > Canvas > Canvas Size... Change the dimensions, in this case the setting is Pixels. You can select where the image will be cropped by using the 'Anchor' options. In this case, the image will be cropped from the centre.
