Crop Images in Photoshop 8

These notes are based on Photoshop 8 on PC. There are several ways to crop an image. These instructions are intended as a basic guide, and do not contain optimised images themselves, as they are designed to be used on campus by UTAS staff. Open your image:

  1. Reduce by eye with the 'Crop Tool (C)': Select the Crop tool (first icon, third row of tools - 1) and drag the crop rectangle (dotted line - 2) to the required size. The crop area can be altered with the guides (small squares). If you mouse around the crop area the cursor will change to a rotate icon. Hold the cursor down and rotate the area. Hit 'Enter' to reduce the image area to the new dimensions.

  1. Reduce by eye with the 'Rectangular Marquee Tool (M)': Drag the marquee rectangle (dotted line) to the required size. The marquee rectangle can be moved around on the image with the keyboard arrows. Copy the selected area and paste into a new image (File > New...). This new image can also be optimised for the web. Other Marquee shapes are available if you click on the Marquee icon.

  1. Change by values: Select Image > Canvas... Change the dimensions, in this case the setting is pixels. In this case the image was 300x225 pixels, and has been cropped to 200x125, and anchored at the centre of the image.
