Reduce Image Quality or Resolution in Macromedia Fireworks MX

These notes are based on Macromedia Fireworks MX 7.02.295 on PC. Other MX versions will be similar. These instructions are intended as a basic guide, and do not contain optimised images themselves, as they are designed to be used on campus by UTAS staff.

To reduce download speed, you may need to reduce the dimensions of the image, or crop the image first. Open your image:

  1. Select File > Export Wizard...'. The ‘Export Wizard opens. ‘Select an export format.’ will be chosen by default.
first window of export wizard
  • Select 'Continue'
  1. In the next window, chose 'The Web’ as the destination (this is the default):
second window of export wizard
  • Select 'Continue'
  1. The next window recommends the best format:
third window of export wizard
  • Select Exit
  1. In the next window, Select the Format you want, and adjust the Quality (percent for JPEG or number of colours for GIF). The size and download of the image will show (see pointer). A preview of what the altered image will look like is displayed in the top panel. The bottom panel shows an alternative format. Select the image below for an enlargement of the Export Wizard
