These notes are based on Adobe Photoshop 8.0 on PC. Other Photoshop versions will be similar, and do not contain optimised images themselves, as they are designed to be used on campus by UTAS staff. View a demonstration of image optimisation in Shockwave.
To reduce download speed, you may need to reduce the dimensions of the image or crop the image first. Open your image:
- Select File > Save for Web...'. The ‘Save for Web' wizard opens. The file format, size and download speed for a selected internet connection is shown in the lower left (1), JPEG, 25.29K and 5 sec at 56.6 kbps respectively in this case. The file format can be changed in the upper right (2).

- To change the value of the internet connection, so you can see how much difference you are making, right click in the lower panel (1), you will get a large range of connection speeds to select from to see how much difference your changes can make (2).

To see how much you have reduced the download speed of your page by optimising images, send your page to your live site and get an analysis of your page speed from the Web Page Analyzer.
