These notes are based on Macromedia Fireworks MX 7.02.295 on PC. Other MX versions will be similar. These instructions are intended as a basic guide, and do not contain optimised images themselves, as they are designed to be used on campus by UTAS staff.
There are at least three ways to reduce image size in Fireworks MX. Open your image:
- Change by eye with the Scale tool (Q): Change the scale of your image to view it at 100% (this is it's real size on the screen). Select the Scale tool (first icon, second row of tools - 1), and drag the corner guide until the image is the size you want with the guides (2).
- Change by values: Select Modify > Canvas > Image Size... Change the dimensions, in this case the setting is Pixels. The proportions will be constrained unless unlocked (click on the padlock on the right hand side)
- Rescale in Export Wizard: Use the Export Wizard, choosing the 'File' tab (middle tab, circled in blue in image below - 1). Modify the settings in the 'Options' tab (to the left of 'File'). The change in download speed will be indicated (2) You can further reduce download speed by optimising image quality, or cropping the image.
To see how much you have reduced the download speed of your page by optimising images, send your page to your live site and get an analysis of your page speed from the Web Page Analyzer.
