Dementia research focuses on community

Supporting people to live well with dementia will be the focus of a series of community forums to be held throughout Tasmania in April and May.

The forums are part of a broader research project run by the University of Tasmania's Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre, Dementia-Friendly Communities: prioritising action through community input.

"The project focuses on engaging with different communities to more fully understand levels of dementia knowledge, and establish current enablers and barriers to the development of dementia-friendly communities," Wicking Senior Research Fellow Dr Helen Courtney-Pratt said.

"With an estimated one Australian diagnosed with dementia every six minutes, it is becoming increasingly important for research to be responsive to community needs."

The forums are designed to enable researchers to directly engage with communities, and inform research direction that will support people with dementia.

The Wicking Centre, based within the University's Faculty of Health, is working closely with Aged and Community Services TAS to stage the forums, which will be held in Smithton on 14 April, Sandy Bay, 22 April; Warrane, 4 May, and Swansea, 25 May.
