Biography
Professor West graduated with a PhD in Molecular Biology from the Howard Florey Institute (University of Melbourne). He joined the University of Tasmania in 1987 and has since filled a variety of positions in the School of Medicine, including current appointments as Associate Head for Research, and Associate Head for Biomedical Teaching. He has published over 90 scientific articles and holds several patents related to his research work.
Research Interests
Professor West is interested in the mechanisms by which nerves regenerate after injury, or during neurodegenerative disease.
Research Projects and Roles
Professor West's research group includes several PhD students and a postdoctoral fellow. Topics include the nerve regeneration in diabetic neuropathy, Alzheimer's disease and during traumatic injury. The group is particularly interested in how a specific receptor found on most neurons is able to increase regenerative growth after disease or injury.
