Biography
Dr Carmen Fernández-Martos completed a degree in Experimental Biology in 2001, at the Experimental Sciences School, University of Jaén (Spain), before being awarded a PhD student fellowship from the Spanish Government in 2003, to investigate various aspects of the molecular biology of Resistin (and the novel isoform Short-resistin) and their involvement in insulin resistance associated with obesity and ageing. This research was carried out at the Biochemical and Molecular Biology laboratory of the Regional Center for Biomedical Research (CRIB), (Castilla-La Mancha University, Spain).
After successfully completing her postgraduate Masters (MS) studies in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biomedicine (2004-2005) at the School of Medicine, Autonoma University of Madrid (Spain) and her PhD (hons Cum Laude) on Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (2003-2007), she took up a position as junior postdoctoral researcher (2007-December 2012) at the Molecular Neurology Group, Experimental Neurology Unit, National Hospital of Paraplegic (Toledo, Spain), to investigate various aspects the molecular and cellular mechanisms of Spinal Cord Injury disease.
Research Interests
Dr Fernández-Martos is interested in research the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). In particular, she is interested in the study of axon degeneration in these conditions and the role that the cytoskeleton and non-neuronal cells have to play in this. For this reason, she uses both in vitro primary cell culture (rat and mice) and in vivo mouse models (APP/PS1 mice crossed with NFL KO mice) of disease and injury.
Research Projects and Roles
- Investigating the role of neurofilament in the development of axonal pathology in Alzheimer’s disease and traumatic brain injury.
