Biography
After graduating with a Bachelor in Medical Research from UTAS, Miss Herbert completed her Honours degree with Associate Professor Inn Chuah, focusing on immune responses in olfactory tissue. Having developed an interest in neuroscience, she decided to undertake a PhD with Professor Adrian West and the NeuroRepair group, studying neurons and their responses to the environment.
Research Projects and Roles
Miss Herbert's thesis focuses on how neurons are able to detect changes in their environment and respond appropriately. She is particularly interested in how receptors called low density lipoprotein receptor-related proteins (LRPs) are involved in this process. LRPs regulate a range of neuronal responses, including neurite outgrowth, survival and synaptic functioning. It is not clear how LRPs differentiate between incoming signals and produce specific responses to them. Miss Herbert aims to better understand how this happens, thereby gaining insight into neuronal responses to the environment and how this can be manipulated to treat or prevent neurodegenerative diseases.
