Living Alone with Dementia
This study aimed to improve knowledge in three primary areas of dementia care within the Tasmanian context:
- Health-related quality of life priorities for people with dementia who live in single person households and the factors that influence their choices.
- Psychosocial and environmental factors that increase or hamper the ability of people with dementia who live by themselves to carry out everyday life activities to the best of their abilities.
- Ways in which these insights might inform improved health service planning and build capacity among service providers, so as to enable people with dementia to live independently for as long as possible.
In-depth qualitative interviews led to the development of an an innovative service tool ‘Activity support for clients with dementia’ (attached) to assist service professionals in identifying the kinds of home environments and activities most suited to individual clients who have dementia and live alone. The tool was subsequently validated by a panel of 12 expert advisors, using the Delphi technique.
