The Dementia Care Learning Pathway is for students looking to specialise in the aged care industry and in the provision of care for people living with dementia.
The Dementia Care Learning Pathway will develop your knowledge, skills and confidence in the provision of care to people living with dementia. The course will prepare you for a range of career paths in the aged care industry, as well as for entry to graduate programs in medicine and allied health. This can lead to a wide range of career paths throughout the public and private health sector.
The Dementia Care Learning Pathway is a flexible course of study that offers the option to exit with an Associate Degree after two years of full-time study, or a Bachelor Degree after three years of full-time study.
Year 1
In your first year, you will be introduced to online study while learning about neuroscience, the nervous system, and dementia in a care setting.
Associate Degree in Dementia Care
Year 2
Year 2 will build on your first year knowledge, providing emphasis on care to dementia patients.
You will also have the opportunity to study 4 units of your choice (electives).
Bachelor of Dementia Care
Year 3
In Year 3 you will consolidate your learning with advanced dementia care topics and case-based learning.
- Location: online
- Intake: February and July (and November 2013)
- This degree is available to anyone nationally and internationally. (Distance and/or part-time study is not available to international students studying under a Student Visa in Australia.)
- Limited HECS scholarships for students within Australia and New Zealand enrolling for a November 2013 start.
- A subsidised fee structure is being offered for students outside Australia/New Zealand for both the elective unit and full degree.
- If you are a participant in the Healthy Brain Project, you may be eligible for a HECS scholarship.
Course Objectives
You will learn about the concepts of normal ageing, diseases that cause dementia, behaviours associated with the disease and practical strategies to care for people with dementia including challenging situations and behaviours.
The course links the biological basis of dementia and related illnesses to symptoms and care. Through case-based learning, you will develop advanced problem-solving skills and gain an understanding of the importance of evidence-based practice.

The Dementia Care Learning Pathway is available as a fully online program of learning, supporting you to find a balance within your work, study and personal lives.
Ongoing Support
With a dedicated student advisor on-hand to assist students throughout the Dementia Care Learning Pathway, you will have access to the assistance you need to maximise your learning online. Via the My Learning Online (MyLO) platform, you will engage in conversations and interactive learning with fellow students.
