For Sarah Rayner, business is very much a family affair. Growing up on a 56-acre cattle farm in the rolling pastures surrounding Sheffield has cultivated her love of animals and agriculture as well as her business acumen.
She started her own successful stud breeding Poll Shorthorn cattle at age 15, following in the footsteps of her eldest sister, Chelsea, who had already founded her own Simmental stud.
Sarah is pursuing her entrepreneurial passion as part of the first cohort of students undertaking the Bachelor of Business (Accelerated) at the University of Tasmania’s School of Business and Economics.
This new fast-tracked teaching model, available exclusively in Launceston, allows students to complete their degree in just two years full-time from a vibrant inner-city space. The degree also offers the flexibility of part-time studies for those who are balancing work or other commitments.
I love the idea of studying business as it opens so many doors and opportunities for future employment and growth.
“I am majoring in marketing with a minor in accounting, yet upon graduation I will not be confined to these fields. I’ll be able to use my degree in many different areas and I believe this will be a huge advantage entering the workforce.”
Having the opportunity to study in the heart of Launceston’s CBD means Sarah and her fellow students have been able to make connections with local industry and explore the prospective career paths that await.
“Some of the highlights so far for me have been making new friends and connections from all walks of life. I have made some great relationships with lecturers and coordinators at the University as well, which has already helped me greatly,” Sarah said.
This has actually led me to start work experience with well-known marketing agency S. Group in Launceston, which has been an invaluable experience.
Sarah’s ultimate career goal is to maintain the close connections she has with the agricultural industry through her work, however she is open to gaining experience in public relations or marketing roles elsewhere and sees this versatility as a strength of the program.
“I would definitely recommend this course to others. Being a fast-tracked and flexible course, it means you are not stuck within the education system for an extreme amount of time and the connections you can make are priceless.”
