In line with its commitment to a sustainable future for Tasmania, the University has now made a major in Sustainability easily accessible and visible for students across the University.

Students in almost all Bachelor’s degrees that have an elective zone can now self-enrol through the eStudent portal in a Sustainability major, alongside their other chosen major.

The exception is degrees where course content is subject to an external accreditation process, such as the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine or the Bachelor of Laws.

The Sustainability major allows students to develop the knowledge and skills that underpin the development of sustainable societies.

It is informed by international and local research findings and concepts, and allows students to develop specialist expertise across the physical and social sciences and humanities.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education, Professor Mitch Parsell, said making the Sustainability major as accessible as possible to students reflected the University’s determination to equip Tasmania for the future in a changing climate.

“Sustainability knowledge is applicable in every sphere of life and will only increase in importance and relevance. Demand among students for sustainability skills and knowledge is high and increasing. We are proud to have the excellent staff and courses to meet that demand."

This expansion of the Sustainability major builds on the University’s record of success in this area, evidenced by its world number-one ranking in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings for climate action in 2022.

"Previously the Sustainability major had been most easily accessible and visible for students in the Bachelor of Science, where it is available as a standalone major."
