Special guests

Sue Pyke teaches creative writing, literature and environmental studies at the University of Melbourne. Her
forthcoming monograph, Animal Visions, explores the political potential in posthumanist dream writing (Palgrave).
Her other works focused on cross-species relations include: a lyrical essay on snake citizenship (The Materiality of
Love Routledge 2017); a literary analysis of violence against people, horses and dogs in Emily Brontë’s Wuthering
Heights (Animals in Victorian Literature and Culture, Palgrave Macmillan 2017); an analysis of the ethics in animal
advocates’ use of drones (with Claire McCausland and Siobhan O’Sullivan, Animal Studies Journal 2018); a
reading of sublimity and cross-species metamorphosis in contemporary literature (TEXT, 2017); a consideration of
divinity and the literary avian (Otherness, 2016); and a personal essay about going vegan in the wake of a dairy
farming childhood (Southerly, 2013).

Hayley Singer is a writer and academic working on her first book, The Fleischgeist: a Haunting. She is a research
associate of the Melbourne node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions, and regularly
writes the ecologies column for the quarterly attack journal, The Lifted Brow.

There will be the option for dinner after the event (at own cost) too.
