Asian Studies: Professional Placement in Asia

This offering is not currently available.

The University of Tasmania "Professional Placement in Asia" consists of a 4 week placement in a non-government organisation or equivalent in Asia. (Australian based placements in NGOs working on Asian issues will also be considered).

Placement in a non-government organisation or equivalent in Asia (4 weeks)

Students will extend and build on the knowledge, skills and capabilities that they have acquired in their Asian Studies units. The practical and theoretical knowledge of volunteering gained in Volunteering in Asia will be implemented within the placement. The professional placement and project is agreed on in advance through consultation with the academic staff of the School, the student, and the host organisation. Placements can be in any country in Asia although each project must pass a risk assessment. Students will be supervised by the host organisation with the academic supervisor monitoring the placement to ensure that the content, progress and outcomes are of an appropriate standard. Placement can be taken during any semester; dates to be negotiated with the Unit Coordinator.

Note that selection criteria must be met to enable enrolment in Professional Placement.

Eligibility

A prerequisite for this unit is successful completion of Volunteering in Asia (HMA251/351). This unit examines the theoretical and political dimensions of volunteering (power relations, development discourse, colonial and postcolonial theory) and helps students' understanding of practical issues relating to working as a volunteer in Asia.
