About AMEB Tasmania

The Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) offers a system of graded music and speech examinations, including publications related to the syllabus and examinations. The syllabuses and supporting publications provide valuable frameworks for studies throughout school years and beyond.

As one of the most respected bodies in this field AMEB's qualifications are recognised as a national benchmark across Australia. AMEB examinations are based on syllabuses designed by leading scholars and performers, regularly updated to ensure that they reflect an appropriate range of performance skills and the latest musicological research. The content of these syllabuses is, wherever practical, published in affordable editions, ensuring that the cost to students of acquiring a full range of the set pieces is as simple and inexpensive as possible.

AMEB Tasmania facilitates examinations of these syllabuses and a unique feature of these examinations is that, wherever possible, specialist assessment in specialist instruments is offered.

In many cases, progression through the AMEB system leads to university entrance and the establishment of professional careers in teaching and performing.

Membership Criteria

Members of the Tasmanian State Committee (Committee) are selected based on their ongoing involvement in service provision, policy or program development within the Tasmania music education sector, with a specialisation in at least one specific discipline, expertise or industry area of:

Private Studio Teacher representative A teacher with an established history of entering students into AMEB Examinations and an active interest in music education.
Schools representative A person in the capacity of classroom music teacher or Director of Music with a minimum of three years' experience.
UTAS Staff Up to three members of staff, nominated by the Chair.

The Committee includes the AMEB Tasmania State Manager in an ex-officio role, and is Chaired by a representative of UTAS, who also serves on the Federal Board.

Where relevant, and upon request from the Chair, representation of a particular sector or area of expertise may be sought outside of these requisite specialisation areas.

All Committee members are also expected to demonstrate positive attributes such as:

  • Strong community networks and linkages;
  • A thorough understanding of AMEB practices and its relationship with the greater Tasmanian music education sector;
  • An ability to constructively participate in an advisory capacity;
  • An ability to represent a broad range of views that reflect the diversity of the community;
  • A strong understanding of the local community and its social, environmental and economic influences;
  • Good knowledge and understanding of the local issues that are relevant to community-based music education;
  • A willingness to contribute positively to meetings in a fair and unbiased manner;
  • An ability to look beyond personal interests for the benefit of the community and AMEB;
  • An ability and willingness to encourage participation from, and provide feedback to the community, including celebrating the successes and achievements of AMEB and music education;

Expectations of Committee Members

All Committee Members are expected to hold themselves to the highest level of professionalism, demonstrating respect for fellow Committee members, their peers, and candidates. It is a requirement of all Committee members that they hold and maintain a valid Working with Vulnerable People Check.

Personal attributes expected of all Committee members include:

  • Integrity
  • Inclusivity
  • A willingness to share both actively and constructively

Committee Members are expected to attend, and contribute to, two meetings annually. Attendance at meetings may be in person or via technology. Additionally, Committee members may be expected to provide advice outside of meetings in circumstances such as:

  • when topics of relevance come to their attention;
  • their expertise is requested by the State Manager;
  • as part of separate sub-committees;
  • or for reasons of expedience.

Committee Members are not remunerated but are entitled to expenses set out in the relevant AMEB policy relating to travel and remuneration. To find out more, please read the Committee Terms of Reference.

Membership Selection

The selection of the membership will involve calling for expressions of interest, with nominations supported by a referee. Referees can include current Committee members. Candidates may be invited by the Committee to nominate for a vacancy. An expression of interest form must be submitted by all nominees. Nominations will be assessed by the Chair against the Membership Criteria. Nominees may be interviewed by the Chair or appointed representatives of the Committee. The Minister for Education (Tasmania) is responsible for appointing members to the Committee. If insufficient nominations are received, positions may remain vacant until such time as an appropriate candidate be found.
