Transformative Information Systems

Information and Communication Technology Research Theme

Overview

This research theme is underpinned by fundamental research interests in:

  1. How technological infrastructures, tools and techniques can be optimally designed and implemented to support transformations of data, information and knowledge, and,
  2. How these transformations inform and impact human behaviours, perceptions and decision-making at individual, organisational and societal levels.

Impact and Engagement

This theme primarily involves applied research working in a range of industry sectors in Tasmania and Australia, as well as internationally involving collaborations in Health Care, Digital Humanities, Human-Computer interaction, Gamfication and eLogistics in Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Researchers in the theme draw on their expertise in:

  • HCI, Information and Interaction design;
  • Data Visualisation and Social Media;
  • Games & Gamification;
  • Health Informatics and Patient-Centred Systems
  • eLogistics & Operations Research for Provenance, Traceability & Trust
  • Expert systems and Machine Learning;
  • Sensor-matics including using ultra-sound, photogrammetry and LIDAR

An increasingly strong focus of research in this theme is on the end-users as part of human-centred approaches that drive new ways to support and stimulate interaction, innovation and end-user creativity. This includes using virtual and augmented reality, games and gamification, visual analytics and computer-mediated collaboration. Researchers are also actively seeking ways to design, implement and evaluate digital applications, tools and techniques to optimise decision-making, safety and efficiency in sustainable energy, production & logistics in a number of sectors including marine ICTs, aquaculture, forestry and agriculture.
