A graduation with a difference

Newsroom

In the most unusual of circumstances, 3,360 graduands have had their degrees and diplomas conferred at a special meeting of the University Council.

While mass gathering restrictions prevented students attending a traditional-style graduation ceremony, University of Tasmania Vice-Chancellor Professor Rufus Black offered his heartfelt congratulations to all graduates and encouraged them not to let the circumstances detract from the joy of what they had achieved.

“Your graduation is a terrific achievement and the fact that we gather virtually in no way diminishes that,” Professor Black said in a 2020 Winter Graduation video message to students.

“This is a very special moment, and like you, I miss not being able to gather around in person to celebrate it.

“Although we are not physically together, that celebration of you graduating each of the journeys that have seen you arrive at this point matters just as much, if not more than ever.

“I’d encourage you to connect however you can with your peers, your family and friends to celebrate this special moment.”

Professor Black said while the COVID-19 pandemic had unsettled many of our traditional ways, it had also helped shape a whole group of graduates with a unique set of experiences and skills.

“Graduating through this time shows you have stamina, adaptability and resilience, and all that will serve you well in whatever you do in life.”

Professor Black said he looked forward to inviting all graduates to participate in a graduation ceremony once restrictions had eased further.

In the meantime, the University will deliver graduation services ‘pop-ups’ in Launceston and Hobart during September to offer graduates access to some of the most popular opportunities available at a formal graduation ceremony, including the chance to dress up in formal graduation attire and have their photograph taken.
