The Podium is the latest building to take shape in the south, as the University creates a distinctive and accessible campus that brings together the majority of our southern operations in the city over the coming decade.
Positioned on Melville Street, its lower levels are dedicated to hosting the University College (UC) University Preparation Program (UPP).
The course offers an alternative pathway for students who are looking to return to study, or commence for the first time.
“For many students, the UPP is the first step in a rewarding learning journey, but we know that taking that first step isn’t always easy,” UC Chief Executive Lee Whiteley said.
“That’s why delivering this program from an inviting environment that’s central, visible, and close to major transport links is so important because it’s removing an accessibility barrier for so many.
“This program is critical to the success of our learners as it equips them with the skills and confidence to articulate into other courses, so we’re excited about its ongoing CBD presence.”
Comprising quiet study areas, semi-private booths, a breakout area, kitchenette, courtyard and open workspaces, the Podium allows for a flexible on-campus experience and rich peer-to-peer connectivity.
Being literally connected to the University’s neighbouring accommodation precinct, which houses a number of communal spaces, also ensures those who are undertaking the UPP have increased opportunities for meaningful student engagement.
“The building design is intentionally porous, so that anyone walking past can literally see inside, allowing us to generate curiosity by putting learning on display and at the front of people’s minds,” Mr Whiteley said.
“The UC ethos is also about providing students with flexible, real-world learning opportunities that prepare them to be job-ready graduates, so there is additional merit in this location as it brings us closer to our community and industry partners.”
With students having now transitioned to the Podium in time for Semester 2, UC will next focus on how to best engage the local community with the new location.
“We’d love the Podium to double as a site where we run school, community and industry activities of an evening and look forward to strengthening our connections with these groups,” Mr Whiteley said.
