Australian of the Year Craig Challen SC OAM will share his fascinating story from the depths of the 2018 Thai cave rescue mission at a free public lecture at the University of Tasmania on Saturday as part of National Science Week.
Dr Challen was named joint Australian of the Year in 2019, with dive partner Dr Richard Harris, for his part in the Tham Luang cave rescue in Thailand last July, in which the lives of 13 people were saved.
Dr Challen began diving in the 1990s and has explored caves and shipwrecks around Australia, Asia and the Pacific.
He will be speaking about his love of investigation and the environment has enabled him to help others.
Craig's talk will be followed by a panel discussion about extreme environments and emergency medicine with:
- Dr Jeff Ayton, Chief Medical Officer and Lead, Human Biology and Medicine Research with the Australian Antarctic Division;
- Dr Kim Norris Senior Lecturer in Psychology (Human Behaviour in Extreme Environments), University of Tasmania’s College of Health and Medicine;
- Dr Rebecca Carey, volcanologist and Earth extreme environments expert, College of Science and Engineering.
The lecture takes place on Saturday, 10 August, 5 pm, in the Stanley Burbury Theatre, University Centre, Sandy Bay campus.
