Urban History Planning 2020

The University of Tasmania is proud to host Australasian Urban History / Planning History Conference 2020 in Launceston from 5-7 February.

More than 60 historians and cultural theorists from around Australia and abroad will meet to present new and emerging research that explores the conference theme 'Edge Conditions: Invented Peripheries, Hidden Centres.'

Speakers will examine this topic through examine geographic, demographic, historical and spatial history of Tasmania and Australia more broadly.

The conference will be held at the UTAS Inveresk campus, in the Architecture and Design building.

Keynote addresses at 5.30pm on both Thursday and Friday evenings are open to the public.

Highlights include Professor Jane M Jacobs from Yale NUS College in Singapore, who will speak about the post-independence development of Singapore on Thursday evening and on Friday evening Dr Stuart King and Professor Harriet Edquist AM will discuss an oceanic approach to understanding the early colonial architecture of the Tasman World.

Other topics of interest include the changing nature and identity of housing and suburbs in Australia, issues relating to the history of Tasmania’s settlement, Slum Abolition League and Housing Reform in Hobart 1940-1945, the history of company housing and discussions on a broad range of urban and planning history from across Australia and beyond.
